Overview & Context

Overview & Context

Jasmyn Cheng is a local Amsterdam painter whose work blends bold color, movement, and emotion. She approached me because she struggled to create a website that felt representative of her art using platforms like Vsble, Squarespace, and Shopify. These builders were either too rigid, too expensive, or too complex for her needs.

She wanted:

  • A more beautiful, personal, and expressive website

  • A simple CMS she could manage herself

  • A lightweight checkout flow

  • An affordable setup

  • A way for visitors to browse longer and purchase confidently

I redesigned and rebuilt her entire site in Framer, giving her a bespoke layout, flexible CMS, and a clean product flow tailored specifically for single-piece artwork.

Jasmyn had tried several website builders over the years, but each one introduced friction:

  • Shopify felt too e-commerce-oriented and not expressive enough for a painter

  • Squarespace lacked customization and filtering options

  • Vsble offered limited styling flexibility

  • Several platforms gated basic features behind higher subscription tiers

  • She struggled to create anything that felt true to her art because she isn’t a designer herself

  • Managing her inventory and workshop information was time-consuming and confusing

As a result, the site didn’t reflect her personality or professionalism—and it didn’t support her sales process effectively.

As a result, the site didn’t reflect her personality or professionalism—and it didn’t support her sales process effectively.

  1. Jasmyn didn’t need the overhead of full Shopify-style inventory management; she simply needed a way to mark pieces as sold while still keeping them displayed.

  2. The site’s aesthetic needed to reflect the emotion and depth of her work while staying clean and easy to navigate.

  3. Visitors needed a quick way to understand if a piece was available and purchase it with minimal friction.

  4. Most buyers were local or regional (NL/EU), so checkout could be simplified into two price tiers.

  5. A bespoke layout would help her stand out among local artists relying on standard templates.

Design Principles & Interaction Model

Design Principles & Interaction Model

  • Clarity and expressiveness — the website must enhance her art, not compete with it

  • Simplicity over complexity — minimal steps, minimal friction

  • Flexibility — she can update artwork, collections, and workshop info without my help

  • Performance — fast loading, fewer external dependencies

  • Crafted presentation — something a template-based platform couldn’t offer

The site was structured around a simple, intuitive flow:

  1. Home → Product Feed
High-level introduction with direct access to current collections.

  2. Product Feed → Product Detail Page
Full-screen artwork imagery, clear availability state, and prominent “Buy Now” CTA.

  3. Buy Now → Stripe Payment Link
A custom component lets users select their shipping region (NL / EU), then sends them to the right Stripe payment link.
International buyers are directed to a contact form.

  4. CMS → Inventory management
    Jasmyn can now:

    • Add new artwork quickly

    • Assign them to collections

    • Mark pieces as “Sold” without removing them

    • Update workshop info in minutes

Everything is designed to be simple, visual, and manageable.

The final UI blends clean structure with expressive presentation:

  • Large hero imagery to highlight her paintings

  • Spacious layout with modern typography

  • Bespoke components that feel crafted, not templated

  • Smooth micro-interactions in Framer

  • A tailored Buy Now component designed specifically for single-piece artwork

  • Workshop pages with clearer layout and improved scannability

The site loads significantly faster than her previous setups and feels much more personal and premium.

Realistic and portfolio-safe outcomes based on your inputs:

  • She can now manage her entire inventory independently, including adding collections and marking sold pieces

  • Page load performance improved significantly, making the site feel lighter and more premium

  • Visitors browse longer thanks to clearer navigation and expressive layouts

  • Monthly platform costs reduced by ~66%, since she no longer pays for higher-tier subscription plans

  • Checkout flow simplified, with Stripe links handling regional shipping pricing

  • The site now stands out visually compared to cookie-cutter artist websites

  • Jasmyn reports the site gives her a “flashier, more professional way of presenting myself”

Challenges & Learnings

Challenges & Learnings

  • Solving for three shipping regions (NL / EU / International) without full e-commerce tooling

  • Building a CMS that stays simple despite variable artwork data

  • Maintaining visual expression while keeping the layout minimal and functional

  • Ensuring the workshop page was easy for her to update without breaking layout

  • Framer is excellent for small creative businesses needing expressive layouts and simple CMS management

  • Lightweight e-commerce powered by Stripe Links is a strong alternative to traditional shop builders when inventory is limited

  • Artists benefit greatly from a bespoke layout—they need flexibility, not a template

  • A simple CMS is key: fewer fields, fewer steps, more control
